good night

it's been a year since i started this blog. one year. talk about commitment!

anyway, this is going to be the last post on this blog. I feel that I have nothing more to say here. I would like to move on and take a bow. it feels somehow like a lot of baggage you know?

I was planning this before the war started, but then the war started, and I couldn't just shut up. and then I forgot about it. and lately it's been on my mind. so.

having said that, i'm not leaving completely, so dont get too excited. i'm definitely going to be reading you, and passionately (sometimes nicely) commenting on what you have to say.

i'm also thinking of starting another blog. mostly photos, and a maybe few words here and there. so i'll be around. just on another spot, and in a different format. and anyway, who knows what happens, right? why does this suddenly feel like i'm trying to break up nicely with you guys? well, i'm not. maybe i am. anyway, khalas, it's over!
it's been great. really.
thanks for reading and commenting and for making this page so hard to part with.

one more thing. live that moment. you know, the one that makes you happy. the one that makes your seemingly hopeless exhausting pointless life worth living. dont just refuse it because it's too inconvenient or impractical or whatever. if it makes you happy, it cant be that bad, right?
shit this is not easy at all.
tayyeb.
bye now.

ya khsara..
..ya khsaraaaaaaaaa... !
..
..

(as i was thinking "ya khsara" and was ready to type it, i heard in my head the voice "ghirbi", one of the lead characters in ghawar's famous play by the same name "ghirbi" (actually written by Mohammad al-Maghout.) Have you watched it? here's the set-up for the line:

Ghirbi is a typical Levantine village, innocent, ignorant, forgotten, stuck in the past, lovely (much like our souls.) This village is exploited by a beik (a feudal lord,) but the villagers seem to not know any better. Ghirbi is also the name of a young woman in the play; she is very idealistic and romantic, and wants to marry only for love, so she's still single. she dreams of a white knight coming into the village on a white horse and swooping her off her feet.

one day a young, idealistic young man comes into town because the government in the capital has assigned him to be the village teacher, to teach the illiterate villagers how to read and teach about the promise of socialism (this play was back in the 70's; such an idealistic, romantic time full of khsara.)

getting back to the story, the young man arrives in the village and finds no one: the beik has introduced a curfew. Ghirbi (the young woman) is on her way home so he stops her to ask for help, directions to the village school because he is also assigned to sleep in the school. he asks her about many things in the village, such as weyn elmadrasi, elbaladiyeh, etc, and every time she answers "ma fi," "ma fi," with the most innocent, lost, sad voice that breaks my heart every time i watch the play. so before she leaves, she hesitates and says, "dakhlak, keef jeet lahon?" and he answers, "3al-bosta." she asks, "ya3ni mish 3ala 7san abyad?" he replies, "la2."

so she looks off into space, and sadly and with a melancholy sense of surrender and loss, she says to herself, "ya khsara. ya khsaraaaaaaaaa...." and runs off stage.

Hello,

I was googling Fairuz's "Li Beirut" amazing song, and I stumbled upon your blog since you posted this song last August.

Many thanks for posting it.

I love Fairuz, I love Beirut, and I love Lebanon.

I love the diversity that Lebanese bring to the Middle East. Am I being naive by writing this?

posted by a non-Lebanese.
